Stand By is a production team of AFDA third year students who have come together for their semester exam film project. This semester project behaves as a qualifier into their final project next semester. Keep in touch to follow their journey through erxperimental and the greater journey of graduation.

Director/writer

Warwick Eccles

Warwick Eccles began his film endeavours co-writing and scoring A 'Little More Spark', which became a semi-finalist at the Los Angeles Cinefest (2018), before beginning his formal studies at AFDA, majoring in Screenwriting and Directing. Outside of AFDA, he is a member of the Yardang Film Group (writing and animating the 2-part short film Rack ‘Em Up), holds his Grade 8 in classical piano from UNISA and is currently scoring two upcoming Yardang Film Group short films, and developing two scripts of his own.

Kgosi Maleka 

Kgosi Maleka is a 20 Year old writer and director based in Johannesburg. He regards himself as a serious photographer, music enthusiast and filmmaker who is an avid viewer of avant-garde cinema. Outside of AFDA he is working on producing music videos for local Hip-Hop & Alternative musicians in and around Gauteng.

Producer

Motselisi Mosebo 

Motselisi Mosebo became passionate about storytelling when she chose to explore documentary filmmaking as part of her grade 11 mini-thesis. Her passion since then lead her to AFDA Johannesburg, where she is currently completing her degree in producing. Outside of AFDA, she is a member of a film collective known as the Yardang Film Group, where she writes and directs her own films, and assists the group in general with her producing expertise. She is interested in furthering her studies with particular interest in entertainment law and marketing in the local film industry.

Tabitha De Jager 

Tabitha De Jager grew up in Pretoria East where she is the youngest of five children. Ever since she was first introduced to movies, she knew she wanted to be a part of the industry. She has found herself on the great journey to finding her voice in her art, learning about filmmaking and learning about producing. She is currently a 3rd year student at AFDA. In her spare time she enjoys reading, writing, baking and cooking. She hopes to get involved in many remarkable international productions in the future.

Script Supervisor

Luyanda Mdepa 

Luyanda Mdepa is very passionate when it comes to film. He is currently studying with a major in screenwriting, and does film editing in his spare time.  There's never a day where he is not being creative, he could be either writing a poem, reading, making music videos with friends or doing something that adds to any project he is busy with.  He believes the best way to be professional is to maintain respect for everyone at all times. He is currently working on a music video concept for a house artist.

Actress

Liyabona Totyi

Liyabona Totyi is a 21 year old Xhosa female from Matatiele, Eastern Cape. Her passion for art is what drove her to studying Live Perfomance. Her talents and hobbies include singing, dancing and modeling. She draws inspiration from strong black women such as Bonang Matheba, Michelle Obama, Gabrielle Union and Beyoncé. Like these women, she believes that there is nothing she cannot do as long as she puts her mind to it. Her passions outside of being an artist are fitness and fashion. She has participated in numerous fashion shows and beauty pageants, and she was an athlete to be reckoned with in her schooling career. She also played hockey for her school’s first team. Liyabona has a flexible personality which has made it easier for her to develop a deeper love and connection with the arts. Her dream is to be recognized on an international level for her talents and to inspire others to just do it.

Nolwazi Khumalo 

Nolwazi Khumalo was born and raised in Kwa-Zulu Natal. She has a diploma in tourism management from Durban Computer College (2016) where she has acquired skills in event planning and travelling. Since then she has been focused on completing her BA in Live Performance at AFDA Johannesburg. Outside of AFDA she is an upcoming musician. Her biggest secret is her love for dancing.

Cinematographer

Danny Zoutendyk

Danny Zoutendyk is a commercial and portrait photographer based in Johannesburg, South Africa. He got his first camera at the age of 15, and has been shooting photographs ever since. He has diplomas in both Lightroom and Photoshop, and is completing a degree  in cinematography at AFDA Johannesburg. He takes a lot of  inspiration from nature. In his spare time he enjoys being active and  in the outdoors.

Editor

Angelique De Abreu

Angelique De Abreu's love for editing came from her love of visual storytelling. She interned in the media department for 3 months at Rivers Church Sandton. This is where her passion became fully recognised into a love of making her audience look inwardly in the form of video editing. She currently is finishing her Bachelor of Arts degree at AFDA JHB where she is majoring in film editing and visual effects. She is also a part-time video editor for a company called Smartz Solutions where she does their tutorial videos and animated marketing videos.

Sound Designer

Timothy Drew 

Timothy Drew is a film student currently completing his degree at AFDA, majoring in Film Sound Design. Film-making has been a major part of his life ever since he was a child and continues to play a huge role. In 2012 he headed a team that won a special mention for being the youngest team to have participated in the 48 Hour Film Project. He currently focuses his attention on the art of sonic design and has been a part of several award winning films. He also runs a small film production collective called the 'Yardang Film Group' alongside a group of his fellow film-makers.

Music Composer

Andile J. Gumbo 

Andile J. Gumbo is a freelance editor, sound designer, and composer based in Johannesburg.

He is currently studying sound design and music at AFDA Johannesburg (BA). He's a classically trained musician whose musical influences primarily include jazz, blues rock, funk, and lo-fi to name a few. He has composed for numerous student short films and animations and has even directed a few shorts of his own. Never sticking in any genre for too long, he's always looking for new and interesting projects to add his musical touch to and expand his horizons.

Colorist

RoxanneSeymour

Roxanne Seymour places most of her focus on completing her degree in colour grading and work, which leaves her with very little time to pursue anything else. However, with the recent lockdown it did provide her time to work on colour grading projects for small businesses and it is her hope that she can continue doing so throughout the year. Although she has plans to work abroad, she wants to continue working on her skill and promoting it through independant local content.

Nicolette Tibbles

Nicolette Tibbles is a 3rd year student at AFDA Johannesburg majoring in Production Design. She thoroughly enjoys her work and would not change it for anything else.  In her spare time, she enjoys online gaming, doing custom digital sketches and painting wall murals for a tattoo parlor in exchange for lessons on tattooing. After completing her degree, she hopes to work under a production design company that she has been approached by. The company works with many TV shows and competitions.

Charne Wille

Charne Wille is the Costume, Make-up and Stylist of the film. She is passionate and has an eye for detail when it comes to  character design and aesthetics . Charne strives to execute her design concept to the T and never seems to fail in new and experimental character designs. She is currently completing her BA degree at AFDA Johannesburg, where she is majoring in CMS and production design

Visual Effects 

Neo Mokgoatjana

Neo Mokgoatjana studied art for three years in high school, where he was allowed a lot of freedom and pushed his exploration to new lengths within himself. He has a love for technology and  wishes to combine it with art to make an impact in digital art . He plans to further his studies in VFX up to a masters and then get involved in projects that help society visually, more specifically, alternate reality. He is currently completing his BA degree at AFDA, specialising in VFX. He is also a photograher and video editor.
